Maldives on a budget: yes, it is possible

Local islands, the right season and smart transfers — how to enjoy paradise without the five-star price tag.

The Maldives has a reputation for being eye-wateringly expensive. It can be — but with a few smart choices, paradise is more affordable than you think.

Stay on a local island

Alongside the famous private-island resorts, the Maldives has guesthouses on local islands at a fraction of the price. You still get white sand and turquoise water — just with a more down-to-earth, local feel.

Travel in the shoulder season

May and from mid-September to November see lower rates and fewer crowds. There is a slightly higher chance of rain, but showers are usually short and the savings are significant.

Watch the transfers

Seaplane transfers are gorgeous but pricey. Choosing an island reachable by speedboat can save a good chunk of the budget — something we always factor in when we plan.

Mix and match

A popular approach is a few nights on a local island, then a splurge night at a resort for the overwater-villa experience. You get the best of both without the full five-star price tag.
